Carpet Care
Before and During Installation
- Carpet cushion plays an important role in preserving the look and feel of your carpet. Investing in a good cushion prevents your carpet from matting and crushing underfoot, as well as offering its own stain and soil protection.
- Provide and maintain indoor temperatures between 65ºF (18ºC) to 95ºF (35ºC) and relative humidity below 65% in the area where carpet is to be installed.
- Continue operating the ventilation system at normal room temperature for up to 72 hours after installation. If possible, open doors and windows to increase the flow of fresh air.
After the Installation
- Maintain temperature of indoor carpet areas above 50ºF (10ºC), regardless of the age of the installation.
- Control tracked-in soil with walk off mats. 80% of house soil is walked in from the outside and settles within a few feet of the main entry.
- Vacuum systematically and often.
- High traffic (4+ people in the home) – vacuum daily
- Medium traffic (2-3 people in the home) – vacuum 2-3 times a week
- Light traffic – vacuum weekly
- Spot cleaning by lifting or blotting excess or treating the spot immediately with plain water or spotters containing mild (pH range 5-9) diluted detergents that do not leave residue.
- Periodic professional cleaning – every 12 – 24 months depending on traffic and manufacturer guidelines.
Hardwood Care
- Use walk off mats near entryways to collect dirt and grit that could scratch your floor.
- Sweep or vacuum (with the beater bar turned off) regularly to pick up dirt and dust.
- Use felt or fabric covered casters or glides on the bottoms of furniture legs to prevent scratching.
- Make sure temperature and humidity are regulated in the home to product manufacturer specifications.
- For cleaning, spray a professional wood cleaning product recommended by your retailer or manufacturer.
- Do not “wet mop” or use excessive water because wood expands when it gets wet and can swell, crack, and/or splinter. Use a damp mop if necessary.
- Minimize sunlight exposure, as it can greatly speed up the aging (color fading) process.
- Some hardwood floors can be screened, sanded, and/or refinished.
Tile & Marble Care
- Use walk off mats near entryways to collect dirt and grit that could scratch your floor.
- Sweep or vacuum (with the beater bar turned off) regularly to pick up dirt and dust.
- Use felt or fabric covered casters or glides on the bottoms of furniture legs to prevent scratching.
- Tile floors should be damp-mopped regularly using the recommended tile and grout cleaners suggested by the manufacturer.
- Do not use steel wool, scouring powders, or other abrasives that can scratch the finish.
- Do not use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer.
- As always, try to clean up spills as quickly as possible, especially anything sitting on the grout.
Vinyl & Plank Care
- Allow 5 days before thoroughly washing your floor.
- Remove dust, sand, and grit particles by sweeping or vacuuming (with the beater bar off) as often as you would for carpet.
- Wipe up all spots and spills immediately.
- When sweeping or vacuuming does not remove the dust and dirt, mop the floor with clean warm water, then rinse with fresh water.
- If water alone does not work, use cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer.
- Use felt pads under all furniture legs that are placed on the vinyl floor to prevent scratches, dents or tears.
- Always lift furniture (do not slide) when moving it to prevent scuffs, scratches or tears.
- Minimize direct sunlight exposure for extended periods of time.
Laminate Care
- Do not polish or wax your laminate unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer.
Green Tips & Alternatives
- Use products with natural ingredients.
- Try homemade cleaners like vinegar, baking soda, or mild dishwashing detergent (but check with the manufacturer and their recommendations first).
- Check areas that are caulked and reapply when necessary to prevent heat or air conditioning from escaping.
- Check your doors for gaps to prevent heat and air conditioning from escaping.
- Minimize space heaters as they require a great deal of energy and can dry out wood and laminate flooring, possibly causing permanent damage.
